ABIES
- FIR Abies
Information: Usually very large, pyramidal,
rough barked trees bearing upright cones which disintegrate after seeds ripen;
undersides of needles usually silvery green to silvery blue. While abies
can be easy to grow, we have found that they are not tolerant of extremely dry
or extremely wet conditions. In containers they are especially difficult,
particularly during warm weather. Planted in a well drained planting mix, they
do well while the mix is new, but after a few months, as the organic matter in
the mix breaks down, the mix becomes more dense and the same amount of water can
kill the tree. Use a soil mixture that contains a high percentage of pumice or
perlite which will not decompose. We are very careful to ship only trees with
healthy live roots; however, only a short time in the wrong soil mixture as well
as too much or too little water for more than an hour or two can kill a young
tree. For these
reasons that are beyond our control, we must modify our replacement policy to
cover only the first three months, with authorized replacement at one-half price
plus actual shipping cost.
Abies alba
- Silver Fir — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) Slow
growing, this stately evergreen can reach heights of 100' or more. Its needles
are dark green above with two white bands on the underside. The Silver Fir can
tolerate more shade than the typical fir but requires somewhat more moist soil.
60380 Abies alba ‘Pyramidalis’ — The
attractive glossy green needles densely held on ascending branches form a
tight columnar tree in youth. Growing 6-12" a year, it will eventually reach
20-30' with a shape becoming more conical with age. 6-12" $32.95
Abies balsamea
— (-40°F,
USDA Zones 3-8) At lower elevations this fir can grow to 60-90', but in higher
elevations, it will stay lower and more prostrate. It is generally stiff in
habit and pyramidal in shape. With its lustrous dark green needles and dark
purple cones (even when young), it is used mainly as a specimen tree. Many good
conifers have come from this hardy tree.
60179 Abies balsamea

attracts much attention in the garden for its neatly compact growth and
texture. One of the best! 6-12" $14.95, 1-2' $24.95
60381 Abies chensiensis
‘Prostrata Glauca’ — (-10°F, USDA Zones 6-8) A rare find, this species is
native to western China. Short, slightly upturned needles are greenish gray

year, trailing over the ground to form a dense, sun-loving carpet.

Abies concolor
- White Fir — (-30°F, USDA Zones 4-8) Needles
are almost vertically arranged on the stems and are flattened and glaucous on
both sides. Generally, this fir grows to 50' but can reach 100' or more. Conical
in habit, it generally branches to the ground, but branches on the upper half of
the tree point upward.
60772 Abies concolor

‘Candicans’ — This is a large-growing fir with long, thick, almost round
needles. ‘Candicans’ is a selection known for it’s striking vivid blue-gray
needles. Its blue color is exceptional in both summer and winter. Its long
needles give it a distinctive, airy appearance reminiscent of some pines.
The tree grows in a cone shape, at a rate of 6-12" a year. In many ways it
looks like a longer-needled blue spruce, except the needles have round ends
and are soft to the touch. Considered one of the best firs for city
planting. Exceptionally handsome, CHOICE AND RARE!
6-12" $39.95
60881 Abies koreana - Korean
Fir — (-20°F, USDA Zones 5-8) Korean firs are desirable for their slow

on the branches. Does best in the cooler climates, although reported to be
somewhat more heat tolerant than other firs.
3-4' $39.95

specimen on all counts: each needle is curled backwards to reveal its
silvery undersides; an abundance of violet-purple cones are borne on the
upper side of the branches. Slow to form a leading shoot, this semidwarf
grows only 3-6" a year. While care should be taken to avoid planting in
boggy soil conditions, the tree has proven to be both pest and disease free.
1-2' $34.95

windbreaks or borders. 2-3' $39.95

gaunt look in youth. As the Atlas Cedar matures, its growth rate slows and it
takes on a flat-topped habit with horizontally spreading branches--an extremely
picturesque and interesting tree. Its needles cast a bluish green color, varying
from light green to almost a silvery blue. Grows 40-60’ high by 30-40’ wide, but
can eventually attain 120' in height by 90-100’ wide. Difficult to transplant
and should be moved as a container or a ball and burlapped plant only. Prefers

there is no standing water. Prefers acid soils, although withstands some
alkalinity. Shelter from strong winds.

the most beautiful specimens for lawn or border and for those who have the room,
it makes a glorious grove when different sized trees are planted. A fast grower
