11039 Rhododendron ‘Vulcan’s Sun’ — (‘Mars’ x griersonianum) 5’, -15^oF, ML, 4/4. We are making a trial run of this plant which was found in a field of ‘Vulcan’s’. After a few years the grower realized that this plant, as well as all of the cuttings from it, grew differently than the others. For the most part it is very similar to ‘Vulcan.’ There are exceptions: The leaves on this plant are larger, flatter, and thicker, which in turn make it less susceptible to tip burn (i.e. more sun tolerant) It is also a more vigorous grower than the original.  The flowers are still the same size and gorgeous red color! The moderate purplish red buds open very light purple with narrow edging of vivid violet with a dark purple spot at base of throat and slight spotting near base of upper lobe. The ball shaped trusses are about 5’’ around, holding 22-24 moderately floriferous flowers. The dark green leaves are 8’’ long and 2’’ wide, with felt like hairy coating below. 10-15"

The flowers are a solid rose color and appear as wide open bells covering the plant from top to bottom. Leaves are small and round with wine red leaf stems. 10617 Rhododendron ‘White Gold’ — (‘Mrs. J. G. Millais’ x ‘Cheyenne’) 5’, -10^oF, ML, 4/3. We have a six foot plant of ‘White Gold’ in our garden that is about 20 years old. Each spring when it blooms from top to bottom with delicious trusses, we realize that this is something special. The flowers are a pure stark white rolled back at the edges as if trying to show every inch of the golden blotch within. The blotch begins as a burning orange deep in the throat, then widens and lightens into rays of golden yellow reaching out onto the upper lobe. Truly beautiful. 6-10", 15-21", 21-30", 30-36"

10173 Rhododendron ‘Whitney Purple’ — (ponticum hybrid) 5’, -10^oF, M-ML, 3/3-4. Syn. ‘Old Port’. Violet blue flowers have a dark eye that stands out. Glossy and deeply ribbed leaves complete the plant. This is the same plant as ‘Old Port’ that has been sold for years, though that plant was not correctly named. The true 'Old Port' is seldom in cultivation.  But the plant most of us know as 'Old Port' has been renamed 'Whitney Purple'. 6-10", 10-15", 30-36"

Well they’re both excellent, just different. This one has a more golden flower color which is a delight to the eye. It is a bit more upright in growth habit with good foliage. 21-30", 36-48"

10479 Rhododendron ‘Wild Affair’ — (‘Jean Marie de Montague’ x ‘Moser’s Maroon’) 6’, -5^oF, ML, 4/3-4. Each ‘Wild Affair’ flower glows! The golden yellow blotch appears to diffuse white light throughout the petal lobes to the rich red petal margins. The foliage is large with an interesting twist, and the color a deep fir green. 0326 Rhododendron ‘Williams’ — (unknown) 5’, -10^oF, L, 3-4/3-4. This plant has beautiful pink flowers with a very showy red blotch. The top petal has an interesting 90 degree bend near its tip. This is probably an old English variety whose original name has been lost. It has also been sold as ‘Springtime’, which is an invalid name. 15-21", 21-30", 30-36"

11178 Rhododendron ‘Wind River’ — (Mindy’s Love x [{(Lem’s Goal x Loderi group) x Lem’s Cameo} x {(Lem’s Goal x Loderi group) x Brandt’s Tropicana}] ) 4’, 0^oF, M, -/-. Ball-shaped trusses of broadly funnel-shaped flowers on this lovely plant. Buds are dark red opening to a cool yellow, with pink wavy edges. The bud color is seen again at the base of the flowers throat with dark red spotting on the three dorsal lobes. The back of the flowers is purplish pink at the edge, melding to yellow with red spotting at the base with calyx. The hairless leaves are broad medium green on top and yellow underneath. 15-21", 21-30"

10627 Rhododendron ‘Windbeam’ — (‘Conestoga’ hybrid) 4’, -25^oF, EM, 4/3. The beautiful apricot pink flowers on this popular small leafed rhododendron change to pure white flushed with a light salmon. The aromatic foliage makes it especially nice on those warm summer days. Big, full, ball trusses of very wavy edged yellow green flowers are the lovely song of this hybrid. Dark red nectar pouches and a small dark red blotch at the base of the throat are the perfect finishing touches. 10525 Rhododendron ‘Windsor Lad’ — (ponticum hybrid) 4-5’, -10^oF, ML-L, 4/3. Here is about the flashiest flower you will see. It is a blue-purple with a flash of light in a golden eye. That gold just glows against the purple background. If you are a purple fan, you’ve just got to add this to your collection. The foliage is narrow, about medium length, and makes a good looking plant. 15-21", 21-30"

10626 Rhododendron ‘Winsome’ — (‘Humming Bird’ x griersonianum) 3’, 0^oF, EM, 3-4/4. The plant is compact with small pointed foliage, and sets attractive reddish flower buds which you get to enjoy all winter. A very hardy, strong plant which was selected by Dr. Gus Melquist of Connecticut from a cross made by Wojnar many years ago. Flowers are a sumptuous orange, lighter in the throat and nearly red at the edges and back of the flower. Bell shaped flowers have an orange calyx, visible in the loose trusses.
