An article in the Winter 1977 bulletin of the American Rhododendron Society questions its parentage, but I see no reason to doubt the above. It might be the reverse cross, but both ‘Anna’ and ‘Marinus Koster’ are clearly visible in the plant. In bud, it shows a deep rose red, which opens rose gradually lightening through many delightful shades of pink to a beautiful pastel pink. Good looking foliage. However, the plant most commonly in cultivation under this name has very light pink flowers, generally beginning to flower about a week later than ‘Christmas Cheer’. The leaves are long and narrow, a rich green and somewhat shiny. It gives an added texture to the other green leaves in the garden. Actually, I question if it actually is the above cross, which would make it an azaleodendron, but more likely another form of ponticum ‘Cheiranthifolium’. Though the above parentage would say that occidentale was the seed parent, I doubt it was and in actuality ponticum was, and that seed grown from it resulted in another of the many narrow leaved forms of ponticum. 6-10", 21-30"
